TMJ and facial pain care in Paris, TX

Jaw pain, clicking and headaches can make eating, talking and sleeping harder. Our Paris office evaluates TMJ problems and starts with conservative care. TMJ and facial pain care is offered at the Paris office only.

About TMJ & Facial Pain

The temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull just in front of each ear. A TMJ disorder, often called TMD, is a problem with these joints or the chewing muscles around them. It can cause pain, stiffness or limited jaw movement, and many cases improve with simple, conservative care.

Common symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face or around the ear
  • Clicking, popping or grating sounds with pain when you open or chew
  • Trouble opening wide, or a jaw that feels stuck
  • Aching when chewing, or a tired feeling in the jaw
  • Headaches near the temples, especially in the morning
  • Worn, chipped or sensitive teeth from clenching or grinding

Treatment options

Self-care and jaw rest

Softer foods, avoiding gum and chewy foods, and warm or cold packs can calm sore muscles.

Custom oral appliance

A custom night guard or splint can protect teeth from grinding and reduce jaw strain for many patients.

Jaw exercises and therapy

Gentle stretching, habit awareness or a referral to a physical therapist can improve jaw movement.

Treating dental causes

Cracked teeth, infection or bite problems that add to pain are treated as part of your plan.

What to expect

  1. 1

    Talk about your symptoms

Your dentist asks when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and about clenching, grinding, injuries and headaches.

  2. 2

    Jaw and muscle exam

The joints and chewing muscles are checked for tenderness, sounds and how smoothly your mouth opens.

  3. 3

    Check teeth and bite

Teeth are examined for wear, cracks and other problems that cause similar pain. X-rays are taken when needed.

  4. 4

    Plan your care

You receive a written plan. If symptoms point to a problem outside dentistry, you are referred to the right physician or specialist.

Frequently asked questions

When is jaw pain an emergency?

Call 911 if jaw pain comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating or nausea, because it can be a sign of a heart problem. Call the office promptly if your jaw locks open or closed or after an injury.

Is jaw clicking always a problem?

Not always. Clicking without pain or trouble opening often does not need treatment. Clicking with pain, locking or limited opening should be evaluated.

Will a night guard help?

A custom night guard can protect teeth from grinding and ease jaw strain for many patients. Your dentist decides whether it fits your symptoms.

Will I need surgery?

Surgery is rarely needed. Most patients are treated with conservative care. If more advanced care may help, you are referred to an appropriate specialist.

Is TMJ care available at other Sonria offices?

No. TMJ and facial pain care is offered at the Paris office only. Patients from other areas are welcome to book in Paris.
